Memorial Gestures Artist Residencies

Are you curious about how we research, remember, and represent difficult pasts? Do you work creatively with archives, objects, places, or stories connected to conflict and displacement? Are you interested in working with archives as part of your creative practice? Would you like to gain experience in navigating challenging subject matter in your work?

Memorial Gestures is a remote residency programme for artistic research into Holocaust Centre North’s Archive. This year we are recruiting for 5 x 8-month long remote residencies, each paid at £6,000, plus travel and material expenses.

Project Zackhor

Mazeltov!

Getting ready for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah is such an exciting time! It’s a chance to celebrate with your family and friends, but also to step into Jewish adulthood and show the world who you are. You’ll look back on this time as one filled with pride, tradition, and amazing new opportunities.

As part of your journey, you can choose to do something really meaningful with Holocaust Centre North. You’ll get to learn about the life of one of our Holocaust survivors; someone who lived through one of the hardest moments in Jewish history and still found the strength to rebuild. Their courage can inspire you, and by sharing their story, you’ll help make sure it’s never forgotten. By visiting our exhibition and doing a bit of research (with lots of support from us!), you’ll become a witness: someone who keeps their memory alive and uses it to make the world better.

There aren’t any strict rules. This is your project, your way to explore the past and help shape the future.

Alongside zakhor (remembrance), you can take part in the mitzvah of tzedakah (charity). By running your own fundraising campaign, you’ll help us protect survivor stories, create learning opportunities, and inspire others to stand up against hate and prejudice. It’s your chance to make a real difference — and to keep these voices alive for generations to come
