Memorial Gestures is a remote residency programme for artistic research into Holocaust Centre North’s Archive.

Now in its fourth year, we are excited to announce Memorial Gestures has developed and expanded with exciting new partnerships and residency formats. This year we are recruiting for:

  • 2 artists-in-residence at Holocaust Centre North.
    – To explore Holocaust Centre North Archive and respond to themes they feel have contemporary relevance.
    Artist Fee: £6000 + travel/materials budget.
    Includes a micro residency with Invisible Flock

  • 1 artist-in-residence at Holocaust Centre North & Centre of Archaeology.
    – To explore Holocaust Centre North Archive and respond to investigations carried out by the Centre of Archaeology in Trawniki, Poland at the site of former Nazi camps.
    Artist Fee: £6000 + travel/materials budget.
    Includes a micro residency with Invisible Flock

  • 1 community-artist-in-residence at Holocaust Centre North & 6 Million +
    – To explore the archives of Holocaust Centre North and 6 Million+ and cocreate a piece of work for Holocaust Memorial Day 2027 with a community of people with lived experience of migration.
    Artist Fee: £6000 + travel/materials budget.

  • 1 cultural-translator-in-residence at Holocaust Centre North.
    To produce a publication of multilingual translations of Holocaust Centre North Archive materials through workshops with community groups.
    Artist Fee: £6000 + travel budget.
    £1000 budget to print final work

Since the inception of Memorial Gestures in 2022 we have worked with: Jordan Baseman, Laura Fisher, April Lin 林森 (MG1); Maud Haya-Baviera, Irina Razumovskaya, Ariane Schick, Matt Smith, Tom Hastings and Rey Conquer (as our first writer and translator respectively) (MG2); Sierra Kaag, Hannah Machover, Laura Nathan, Nathalie Olah and Chebo Roitter Pavez. We will be hosting ONLINE Info Sessions for prospective applicants on March 24th (12.30 GMT) and March 24th (17.30 GMT).
