We stand in solidarity with The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) and their decision to silence their account on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Our organisation and the work we do is dependent on community and productive communication. Both are crucial to continuing Holocaust education, remembrance, and research, in addition to combatting contemporary antisemitism, prejudice, and hate speech.
Under its recent acquisition by Elon Musk, X has suffered detrimental changes which have allowed misinformation and hate speech to flourish, promoted by algorithms that thrive on negative engagement and disregard content moderation.
We feel that maintaining an active presence on X under its current ownership is a direct contradiction to our organisation’s values, and the stories, people, and communities we steward deserve a better platform. It is our responsibility to ensure that survivor stories are handled with care and respect. As X profits from any engagement with our content, ceasing our activities on this platform means that we will no longer contribute to its advancement.
However, this does not mean our work will cease to exist or no longer continue. We are choosing a silent protest, not one of erasure. Our account on X, though inactive, will remain accessible as a testament to the stories already told. We encourage those who wish to sincerely engage with our work going forward to find us on our other social media platforms (now including Bluesky).
We will continue to respond to these changing times in the best way that honours our mission and those who began it.
