On Wednesday May 10th we are staying open late to give visitors a last chance to see Daria Martin’s exhibition Afterimages. Come along until 7.30pm. Our permanent exhibition will also remain open.
Afterimages is an exhibition of films by Daria Martin. Martin’s films Tonight the World and Nostalgia Ranch draw from a cross-section of dream diaries kept by Martin’s grandmother, Susi Stiassni. Susi, an artist and Czech Jew, fled the imminent Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938. Her dream diaries span 40 years and 20,000 dreams.Retracing the legacy of her grandmother’s emotional history, Martin considers the unconscious underpinnings of intergenerational trauma, loss, and resilience.
For the last film in the series, Nostalgia Ranch, Martin generated the text and lyrics of the film through ‘social dreaming’ workshops with descendants of Holocaust survivors, facilitated by Holocaust Centre North.
