Artist Talk: Karen Russo

Karen Russo will discuss the political themes in her work, which delves into the legacies of German Romanticism and the Third Reich, to examine how images and myth shape socio-political narratives and our views of history.

The talk will include extracts from her films including Externseine, Tet Stadt and Haus Atlantis, and will consider how myth, mysticism and irrationality might be resurfacing in politics today.

Karen Russo’s (b. 1974) work uses documentary and narrative in an exploration of how knowledge, perception, and culture intertwine the rational with the obscure.

Russo has exhibited widely including Whitechapel Gallery; Barbican; Hayward Gallery Project Space; Tate Modern; Delfina; Towner Eastbourne; Athens Biennial; KinoKino Kunstsal, Sandnes; Busan Biennial; Montevideo, Amsterdam; Große Kunstschau Museum, Worpswede; HKW, Berlin; Krefeld Museum, Krefeld and more.

Her films have been screened in film festivals such as Oberhausen, Ann Arbor, EMAF and Kasseler Dokfest. Russo is a 2023 Film London Jarman Award nominee.
