In this talk, Lindsey Dodd will introduce her new book Feeling Memory: Remembering Wartime Childhoods in France, which was published with Columbia University Press’s Oral History series in 2023. Drawing on a variety of French oral history interviews with 120 people – some interviewed by Lindsey Dodd, others located in archives across France – this book is an affective exploration of children’s experiences in the past, as well as the ways in which they are remembered. It is a book made of memories, which takes as its starting point that memories are made of feeling. As such, it is an historical account with a difference. After introducing these ideas, the talk will focus in its second half on the twelve Jewish children whose interviews contributed to building this rich tapestry of individual lives inside a complex combat and its aftermath.

Dr Lindsey Dodd is an independent oral historian and historian whose work has dealt extensively with children’s lives in France during the Second World War. She was until 2023 employed as Reader in Modern European History at the University of Huddersfield. Her two monographs are French Children under the Allied Bombs, 1940-1945: An Oral History (Manchester University Press, 2016) and Feeling Memory: Remembering Wartime Childhoods in France (Columbia University Press, 2023).
