Join us for an evening of poetry, story and music with Storyweaver Ruth Steinberg, musician Martίn Berger and local Batley poet Mohamed Saloo – their performances explore the Holocaust, war, and discrimination alongside hope, love and healing.

Mohamed is a founder of Batley Poets. Born in the town of Batley, West Yorkshire, where he still resides today. He is the youngest child of Ahmed and Hawa Saloo, who came to Britain from India in the 1960s. He has performed with the Batley Poets and individually at several events over the years. After being featured in a number of anthologies, in 2021 Mohamed released his first poetry collections, Batley Lad and Loss. He will share a selection of poems which explore culture, racism and loss through the lenses of hope, love and humour.

Ruth and Martίn collaborate in a duet that interweaves words with sounds, improvised music with spoken word. Out of poetry and sound something new appears, more than the sum of its parts.

What began as a long poem written by Ruth years ago, took on a new life when Martín introduced his voice, the sound of his saxophone. Martín and Ruth play together; they influence each other and create something new and unique, where the words turn into music, and sound becomes poetry.

Their performance of A Child Draws a Butterfly in the Sandscar -written from the perspective of a child born only a few years after the end of World War II.  The performance is about 1 hour long.

The event will be held at 6pm Thursday 19th November 2026 at the Hudawi Centre, Great Northern Street, Huddersfield, HD1 6BG. Parking is available at the centre.
