Holocaust Centre North proudly invites you to attend the opening of Memorial Gestures, hosted by Sunny Bank Mills.
This premier exhibition is the culmination of three years of our unique artist residency Memorial Gestures. In this time, leading and emerging artists, writers, and translators have been invited to engage with the Holocaust Centre North Archive, reflecting on the ever-increasing importance of Holocaust commemoration through artistic and creative practice.
The1912 Mill at Sunny Bank Mills will be home to the work of fourteen Memorial Gestures artists from across the residency’s three-year span:
Jordan Baseman, Laura Fisher, April Lin 林森 Maud Haya-Baviera, Irina Razumovskaya, Matt Smith, Ariane Schick, Tom Hastings, Rey Conquer, Hannah Machover, Laura Nathan, Chebo Roitter Pavez, Sierra Kaag, and Nathalie Olah.
Encompassing work in textiles, video, installation, photography, drawing, etching, ceramics, print, translation, found objects, and text, each of these artists embody a wholly unique perspective. Their work represents a a diversity of identities, nationalities, lived experiences, and personal connections to histories of the Holocaust, migration, loss, and hope. Together, their work asks questions of memory, representation, and responsibility.
