The Third Reich was the official Nazi designation of Germany and its occupied lands from January 1933 to May 1945. It was designated the Third Reich (meaning Realm or Empire) as the Nazis believed it was the successor to the two previous German Empires: the Holy Roman Empire (800 – 1806) and the German Empire (1871 – 1918).
