A pogrom is a violent attack or riot against a community due to race of religion. Pogrom is more commonly used when discussing anti-Jewish violence. The term was first used in Russia after anti-Jewish rioting in Odessa in 1821. Pogroms can be spontaneous or organised, and carried out by civilians or local authorities.
